Google May Start Reading Your Gmail and Photos to Target Ads
Google quietly updated its privacy policy to say that data from Gmail and Google Photos could be used to power 'personal intelligence' features and target advertising. The company had previously promised not to scan Gmail content for ad purposes after dropping that practice in 2017.

- X algorithm factor 5
- Relies on the reader already knowing the Gmail-scanning backstory; without that it's just a shrug of a punchline, and the date error gives skeptics an easy 'well actually' quote-tweet.
- Conceptual accuracy 5
- The real story says Google dropped Gmail ad-scanning in 2017, but the punchline says '2016' — a factual slip that undercuts the joke's credibility even though the overall gist (old practice, new branding) lands.
- Humor dry 6 · nerdy 3 · zinger 5 · pithy 7
- Dry setup works ('It knows you now. Deeply.') but the payoff is a flat date-drop rather than a sharp mechanism gag, so it reads clever-adjacent rather than quotable; little technical specificity to reward nerds.
- Visual clarity 5
- Panel 1 is visually busy with founder squeezed beside an oversized board; Norm's raised-fist gesture in panel 2 doesn't match his questioning line; balloon tails floating above heads rather than pointing cleanly also muddy who's reacting to what.
